Launceston LETS (Local Economic Trading Scheme)

The Launceston LETS is a bartering system which uses its own currency call Lans.  Members trade their skills and goods and are paid in Lans (each Lan is worth approx. £1).  The members use the directory of the skills and services offered/wanted and the payment is made by LETS cheque.  The LETS bank accounts are similar to normal banks but use Lans as the currency.

There are around 60 members in Launceston and they meet socially and to sell goods on the 1st Friday in each month at Glenkeller.  We try to do something different each month, a storytelling, making something, curry evenings, or a talk. LETS groups are thriving all over the country as more and more people not employed or retired use the scheme to get jobs and services that they need in exchange for their own skills.  Think about the skills that you could offer - you'll be surprised how many!
An example is Mary has a dripping tap so she looks in her LETS directory and finds Tom offering plumbing, they agree a price and Mary gives Tom a LETS cheque. Tom decides he would like someone to help with his garden so he looks in the directory and finds John who come and helps him.  Tom then give John a LETS cheque.
