After watching the 2014 Great British Sewing Bee have come back to sewing after many years, now enjoying learning dressmaking but realised how little I know so after making bags, pillows, tops and book covers decided to go on some basic courses to learn more about dressmaking.  This has opened up a whole new world to me and I know I am going to enjoy the journey.

I have a Singer Heavy Duty and a Singer One Plus machines and an Singer overlocker – bit of a Singer fan!  Update now have a Brother Innovis V3 Embroidery Machine

Dress 1.3.15  Made this dress from some fabric I bought over 30 years ago and had never known what to do with it,  it is very silky and slip a lot when handling.   Was difficult to cut out and had to use my Teflon foot to sew it.  Decide to bias bind the neck and armholes but didn’t know what to do with the hem, so tried something new – put bias binding around the hem line sewing the top folded over and top stitched, the bottom edge I folded back around the edge of the hem so it formed a nice neat finish.

Tuesday 24th February 2015

Just got back from a trip to the Caravan Show at NEC,  went into Birmingham City and found so many fabric shops including Fancy Silk Store which has 4 floors of fabric – an Aladin’s cave.  Well worth a visit if you are up there.

Monday 2nd and Tuesday 3rd February 2015  Dressmaking Course at Cowslip

Rock&roll dress 2 Went to the wonderful Cowslip Workshops in Launceston here in beautiful Cornwall for a 2 day dressmaking course. Becky was the teacher and she is a really great person to learn from.  We made a tuille from muslin for the bodice so that the dress fitted me properly.  What I have learnt is that commercial sewing patterns don’t fit me correctly, so we adapted it.  5 other ladies also went on the course and each made lovely garments.  While there I sold the Janome sewing machine I had taken with me to someone who will really love it.  Also found out there was a Block Pattern Course on the next 2 days so booked into that.  Great surroundings, nice shop and lovely restuarant for lunch.  So pleased I did this course.
